Quick answer
Why is pipework insulated, and what materials are used?
Pipework is insulated to cut heat loss, prevent freezing, stop condensation and keep surfaces safe to touch. Common materials are foil-faced mineral wool and phenolic sections, with thickness set against BS 5422 and TICA guidance. The project specification states exactly which material and thickness each service needs.
Why is pipework insulated?
Four reasons cover almost every specification. Insulation cuts heat loss from hot services, which saves energy. It protects exposed runs from freezing, often alongside trace heating. It stops condensation forming on cold services. And it keeps reachable surfaces at safe-touch temperatures for personnel protection.
Which materials are commonly used?
Foil-faced mineral wool pipe sections, such as Isover and Rockwool, cover most heating and domestic services. Phenolic sections, such as Kingspan, give higher thermal performance where space is tight. The foil facing doubles as a vapour barrier on cold services, and external runs get a weatherproof finish over the insulation.
What is TICA guidance?
TICA is the UK trade association for the thermal insulation industry. Its guidance sets out how insulation should be applied, finished and inspected on site. Specifications often reference TICA guidance alongside BS 5422, so the installer is expected to follow both.
How is insulation thickness specified?
BS 5422 is the British Standard used to determine insulation thickness for pipes and equipment. The M&E consultant selects a thickness based on the service temperature and pipe size, then writes it into the project specification. The installing contractor works to that specified thickness.
Where is pipework insulation most critical?
Plant rooms and risers carry the highest concentration of pipework. Ceiling voids above occupied space need reliable condensation control. Healthcare and other continuously occupied buildings need insulation installed around live services.
