Quick answer
What is personnel protection insulation?
Personnel protection insulation keeps the outer surface of hot pipework and fittings at a safe-touch temperature, so people working nearby are not burned. It is fitted wherever hot services run within reach — typically up to around two metres from floor level — including the valves, flanges and pumps that are often left bare.
Why do hot services need safe-touch insulation?
Heating, hot water and steam pipework routinely runs at temperatures that burn skin on contact. In plant rooms, corridors and service voids people work next to these services every day. Insulating to a safe-touch surface temperature removes that hazard while also cutting heat loss.
What surface temperature is considered safe?
Industry guidance generally treats a touchable surface as one kept below around 60°C, with lower targets where contact could be prolonged. The insulation thickness needed to achieve this depends on the pipe temperature, and is set by the project specification rather than guessed on site.
Which fittings are most often missed?
Valves, flanges, strainers and pumps are routinely left bare because they need occasional access. Each one is a burn hazard and a significant heat-loss point. Removable insulated jackets solve both problems — the fitting is protected and still accessible in seconds.
What standards cover personnel protection?
BS 5422 includes thickness tables for personnel protection as well as for heat loss, and TICA guidance supports its application on site. Where a specification calls up safe-touch requirements, the stated thicknesses are installed without substitution.
Where is safe-touch insulation required?
Typically on any hot service within two metres of floor level or within arm's reach of access routes, platforms and ladders. Boiler rooms are the classic case, but the same applies to risers, corridors and school or hospital service areas where untrained people may pass.
