Quick answer
How is insulation thickness specified?
BS 5422 sets insulation thickness for pipes, ducts and equipment by combining pipe size, service temperature and ambient conditions, then applying the purpose — heat loss limit, condensation control, frost protection or personnel protection. The M&E consultant writes the chosen thickness into the project specification, and the installer works to it without substitution.
What is BS 5422?
BS 5422 is the British Standard for thermal insulation on pipework, ductwork and equipment operating in the temperature range of roughly minus 50 to plus 600 degrees Celsius. It gives recommended insulation thicknesses by pipe size and service temperature, and it is the reference most UK specifications call up.
How is pipe insulation thickness chosen?
The thickness is selected from BS 5422 tables using the pipe or duct size and the service temperature. The specifier then confirms the purpose the insulation must serve — limiting heat loss, stopping condensation, preventing freezing or protecting personnel. Each purpose can push the thickness in a different direction.
What role does ambient temperature play?
The surrounding air temperature affects both heat loss and condensation risk. A chilled water pipe in a warm plant room faces a bigger dew-point gap than the same pipe in a cool basement, so the thickness and vapour barrier must suit the actual ambient conditions, not a default assumption.
Heat loss, condensation, frost or personnel protection?
Heat loss thicknesses are set to hit an energy target. Condensation control adds thickness and a continuous vapour barrier so the surface stays above dew point. Frost protection is paired with trace heating. Personnel protection limits the outer surface to a safe-touch temperature on hot services.
Why does matching the spec matter?
An under-thickness run wastes energy or allows condensation to form. An over-thickness run costs more and takes up space that may not exist in a packed riser. Matching the specification exactly keeps the system performing and the package compliant, which is why substitutions are not made on site.
