Accreditations to Look For in an Insulation Subcontractor

Accreditations are the quickest way to check that an insulation subcontractor can work safely, to standard, and on the type of site you are running.

Quick answer

What accreditations should an insulation subcontractor hold?

Look for CSCS cards for site access, TICA membership and NVQs in thermal insulation for craft skill, IPAF and PASMA for working at height, SSSTS or SMSTS for supervision, and Constructionline Gold for pre-qualified contractor status. Together they show the contractor can mobilise a competent, supervised team onto a live site.

What does a CSCS card prove?

A CSCS card confirms the holder has passed the health and safety test and holds a relevant qualification, and is the basic requirement to access most UK construction sites. No valid card means no site access, so it is the first thing to check.

Why does TICA membership matter?

TICA is the Thermal Insulation Contractors Association. Membership shows the contractor works to the association's standards and supports the trade's training. A TICA member is accountable to a body that sets how thermal insulation should be carried out.

What is an NVQ in thermal insulation?

An NVQ in thermal insulation is a competence-based qualification assessed on the job, covering pipework, ductwork and cladding skills. It proves the operative can actually do the work to a recognised standard, not just that they have attended a course.

Why are IPAF and PASMA needed?

IPAF certifies operators of powered access — MEWPs and scissor lifts — and PASMA certifies assembly of mobile alloy towers. Insulation often involves working at height on risers, ceilings and rooftop plant, so these tickets are needed for safe, compliant access.

What do SSSTS and SMSTS cover?

SSSTS trains site supervisors and SMSTS trains site managers in health, safety and welfare. A subcontractor with SSSTS or SMSTS holders can put competent supervision on site, which is what main contractors look for on larger or higher-risk projects.

What is Constructionline Gold?

Constructionline Gold is a pre-qualification standard that audits a contractor's health and safety, financial standing and references. Main contractors accept it as evidence that a subcontractor is pre-qualified, saving repeated vetting for every project.
