Trace Heating & Frost Protection for Plant Rooms
Electric trace heating under insulation for the frost-vulnerable pipework in and around plant rooms — make-up, dosing and external feed lines, with thermostatic control.
Quick answer
Which plant room pipework needs trace heating?
Plant rooms contain small-bore pipework that freezes first: cold water make-up, dosing lines, condensate and external feeds near louvres or roof penetrations. Trace heating cable keeps these lines above freezing; insulation over the cable holds the heat in. SR Thermal Services installs both as one package, nationwide.
The pipes most at risk in a plant room are rarely the big ones. Small-bore make-up, dosing and feed lines sit still for long periods and often run close to louvres, roof penetrations or external walls. One hard frost can freeze and split them.
Trace heating provides the protection. A self-regulating heating cable runs along the pipe and adjusts its output to the temperature, so it draws power only when conditions demand it. Thermal insulation over the cable holds that heat around the pipe instead of losing it to the room.
Control matters at plant room scale. Ambient-sensing or pipe-mounted thermostats switch circuits automatically, and control panels give the maintenance team a clear indication of circuit status. We install the cable, insulation and finish, and coordinate with the electrical contractor who makes the final connections.
Every frost-vulnerable run is treated as a system: cable, insulation and a sealed weatherproof finish where the pipework passes outside. Valves, strainers and fittings on the traced route are insulated too, because an unprotected fitting is where the freeze starts.
We install trace heating as a subcontractor to main contractors and M&E contractors across the UK. Quotations are prepared from your drawings and pipe schedules, confirmed by a free survey of the routes at risk.
Frequently asked questions
Which pipework typically needs frost protection?
Cold water make-up, dosing lines, condensate and any feed pipework near louvres, roof penetrations or external walls. We identify the routes at risk during the survey.
Do you install the cable and the insulation?
Yes — we fit the trace heating cable and the insulation system over it as one package. Final electrical connection and certification are completed by a qualified electrical contractor.
Can trace heating be added to an existing plant room?
Yes. We survey the routes at risk, remove failed insulation where needed, fit the cable and reinsulate to specification with thermostatic control.
How is the system controlled?
Self-regulating cable adjusts output with temperature, and thermostats or control panels switch circuits automatically. The control arrangement follows the project specification.
Do you work nationwide?
Yes. We are based in Milton Keynes and deliver plant room trace heating packages across the UK as a subcontractor.
